  • WAS I READY FOR THE RESULTS?

    February 27, 2025
    Anxiety, Apprehension, TBI

Anxiety was present during the night before, on the drive there, and then sitting in the room waiting for the Dr. and staff to enter with my results…..

My thoughts were all focused on how I felt when I left on the day of my testing. I was convinced there was no way I was ready to hear those results. I didn’t want to hear the results! I didn’t want to hear how damaged I was! All I wanted was to feel like me again!

The door opened, and in came the Dr. and a student who was training under her, greetings were shared and the check-up list was done of how I was feeling and how things were going at home, and then came the question!? “Are you ready to hear the results?” I smiled and looked at her for a bit, my courage started to come forward, and I said, “Not certain I’m ready, but determined enough to work as hard as is needed for me to improve.”

Most of my brain trauma was in my right side of the frontal lobe and its connections. A TBI that causes damage to the Frontal Lobe can cause significant cognitive and executive dysfunctions. So what are these dysfunctions?

    COGNITIVE ISSUES:

1.Memory Problems: Difficulty encoding(Encoding is the first stage of memory, where new information is processed and prepared for storage. When Encoding is difficult, information may not be properly transferred into long-term memory, leading to forgetfulness or challenges recalling details.), organizing, and retrieving information, leading to errors like misattributing sources or conflating details.

    2. Attention Deficits: Reduced ability to focus, sustain, or divide attention across task.

    3. Processing speed: Slower cognitive processing, impacting decision-making and task completion.

    4. Learning Challenges: Impaired ability to acquire and apply new knowledge effectively.

    EXECUTIVE DYSFUNCTIONS

    1. Planning and Organization: Difficulty setting goals, prioritizing tasks, and managing time effectively.
    2. Cognitive Flexibility: Inability to adapt thoughts and strategies in response to changing circumstances.
    3. Impulse Control: Increased impulsivity or disinhibition, leading to risky or socially inappropriate behaviors.
    4. Emotional Regulation: Challenges with empathy, social judgement, and managing emotions(“hot” executive functions.)
    5. Self-Monitoring: Poor awareness of one’s limitations or performance (impaired self-awareness)

These impairments can significantly impact daily life, relationships, and independence. These functions are critically important for quality of life, as they are implicated in job performance, social relationships, and both basic and instrumental activities of daily living. Both cognitive and behavioral functions fall under the general umbrella of executive functioning, and many of these can be affected by Traumatic Brain Injury.

Well…Hmmm, I still don’t know what to say, and my Neuropsychologist has dealt with this enough, because she took over and started talking and letting me know what the next steps were. She was very supportive about knowing that I was feeling extremely overwhelmed. She asked me to leave the idea that I wasn’t going heal at the door. She said everyone thinks that, but she said this is her job and she’s been doing it for many years, and people in my age group with my severity level of my injury, heal! It will take patience, work and time! She said she was scheduling me with a Speech Pathologist that deals with TBI patients. I will see her personally the first visit, but then we will meet 3times weekly per Zoom.

When I’m writing this today, I can honestly say that I don’t remember much about this day, or how I felt. What I think today re-reading this, is I didn’t know much of what she was talking about, but I’m certain that I was thinking there is no way in hell I’m going to recover!

If there are people reading this, that are dealing with any of these things, make sure you are seeing someone that can help! Don’t ever give up on yourself. This Dr. was correct, I did heal! It did take patience, diligent work, and time (probably about two years). As this continues, I will be honest with you about me being a bit ornery, and not doing or thinking I didn’t need to be doing all these things I was supposed to do. I probably have lists of things you need to listen about and do things you are supposed to do, they all did and do help!

    Talk to you soon! Michelle

    Apprehension, Healing

Today I want to talk about things that I keep revisiting, things I dealt with during my mental rehab. I want to share things that others are trying to work through in their trials.

This took place about 14 weeks post accident. I was doing great! (so I thought). I was scheduled to see a Neuropsychologist for an evaluation. Not sure why I’m going there or if I really need to be going, because I’m doing great! I mean I’m back walking and moving well! We met, I answered questions, filled out forms with questions about my thoughts and how my memory is, then I was told I had to do testing, like 7 hours of testing. I swallowed hard and got it scheduled. My daughters came and sat with my spouse and away I went…

I follow the receptionist down the hallway, starting to get a bit nervous, my family has always been right by my side through this all, now I’m doing this alone. Got to the room and sat down with a young lady who will be doing the testing. Timed worksheets, listening to stories on computer, matching shapes and colors and lots of other things for 3 hours. Now it is time to go to lunch! Found my darlins, smiled, and we went and found good food! Answered questions and questions and a few more, then I suggested maybe we could leave. They took me back and I headed to my room again and testing restarted. The first thing I had to do was name words that started with the letter she gave me for 15 seconds…the first letter was A, deep breath and thinking this won’t be so hard…I thought and thought and thought, only word that came to mind was ass, but I couldn’t say that, that was rude! I think I only thought of 3 words, and other letters weren’t much better. Three and half hours later, I finished. Got outside walking to our car and here come my tears. This was the very first time I found out or realized ,just how injured I was, still was!

It took me a couple years of thinking about that, that I figured out how very important that was. I thought I was fine! For those of you going through this feeling, it is devastating, heartbreaking, and makes you second guess yourself, will I ever be Ok? Yes you will be, take a deep breath, and know how fortunate you are to learn this. Now you get to work! This is daily work, morning, afternoon and evening. When we got together with family, my son-in-law would shout out a Letter, and me naming words got to be my favorite game.

I will write about the results and what was next the next time I write. Keep Faith, Trust yourself and those around you, and Trust the professionals taking care of yourself. I am well, and I want you to be!

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries

    Anticipation

Traumatic Brain Injuries usually results from a violent blow to the head. This can be the result of a car accident, a fall or a sports injury. A TBI may also occur from inertial forces, such as /whiplash so severe that it jars the brain until it bumps up against the rough, bony interior of the skull.

What happens with this injury? This all depends on the severity of this injury. A concussion is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury, which may be one reason people don’t take TBI’s as seriously as they should. TBI’s can be very severe, this can be very serious, life alerting and or life changing which may change the levels of independence.

When I wrote about the date of January 8, 2018 in my previous blog, that was my first memory since our accident, 24 days before. I knew everyone that morning, everyone that was part of my life. I didn’t recognize any caregivers or know any of their names. That morning a friend stopped by and dropped off goodies for my family, she quietly walked in and set them on the table by my bedside, she smiled at me and left. I watched her and thought, “I wonder why she was here, she is going on vacation this month.” I remembered that correctly!

    I’ll be back soon

    Healing, Well Being

I thought I knew what I was doing!

Hello everyone, and my apologies again and again for my first reel.(Hopefully not my last.) My reel was supposed to be 6.5 minutes long, with the ending explaining what the purpose of it, was about. Well, I’ll tell you… January 8th, 2018 was my first memory after an accident on December 15,2017, so I missed Christmas, but my amazing family, were all with me. I survived with the help of so many people that God has blessed me with. God has keep me here, so what is my purpose? This is something I have struggled with for the last 6 years. I have been a caregiver for most of my life, a wife, a mother of 4, a nurse for 30+ years and now a mother of 8, & a grandmother of 9 beautiful grandchildren, I have been so blessed. I do believe I have started to feel what my purpose is. In this accident, I had two brain bleeds, a traumatic brain injury. This is my purpose, to help, assist, guide and share things that aided me, spoke to me and things that gave me hope in getting through the struggles that changed our lives. This is what I was sharing in my reel.

Anticipation, Best Sounds, Favorite Place, Well Being

The Ocean holds immense symbolic and cultural significance across various societies and belief symptoms. It represents vastness, mystery, power, and the cycle of life. These symbolic associations can resonate deeply with individuals, fostering a sense of connection and reverence towards the marine realm. The ocean and it’s creatures have an enduring and alluring hold on many people.

Standing on the beach, listening to the crashing waves, feeling the light spray of water, smelling the salt in the air, our emotional well being overcomes us with this interactive experience. As we walk forward, we can feel the stronger currents hitting against us. We extend our stance to assist our balance. Continuing to listen to the waves and now hearing the sound of seagulls. Spirituality has just heightened over and over again with each new sound, and realizing our sense of connectiveness with nature has also risen, along with heightened self awareness, inner peace and harmony.
